            Abstract

This article investigates the presence of Bar-headed geese in Tamil Nadu during the winter season, despite the species not being part of its traditional winter range. The study synthesizes historical records, recent observations, and collections from natural history museums to establish the validity of this phenomenon. Notable records include early observations by naturalists, such as Jerdon, describing sightings of these geese in the southern parts of India. Reports from various locations, including coastal areas, wetlands, and urban environments, substantiate their winter visits. The Asian Waterfowl Census data reflects fluctuating Bar-headed goose populations in Tamil Nadu over different years. The article concludes that while not common, Bar-headed geese do exhibit a regular winter presence in Tamil Nadu, prompting the need for further research to comprehend the underlying reasons, potential shifts in migration patterns, and their ecological implications. The unexpected winter visitation of Bar-headed geese to Tamil Nadu underscores the importance of ongoing monitoring efforts and collaborative research to decipher the nuances of this phenomenon.
