            Abstract

What does ‘dependency’ mean in the little studied, land‐locked state of Niger? Class formation, the creation of a ‘national’ bourgeosie and the nature of the post‐colonial state have normally been studied in relation to the larger, more prosperous countries like the Ivory Coast and Kenya. (The discussion of which is further pursued in our Debatessection). Here the author examines the differing impact of colonialism on a small country and provides basic information on the workings of the Nigerien state.
